History of ISKR

ISKR was formed in 2009 by a group of parents seeking an American style, non-denominational education of the highest standards for their children. Starting with just 15  students primarily from the Dutch and American communities, ISKR has now grown to 230 students representing over 45 nationalities.

Classes originally met in a converted hotel in the Kimihurura district of Kigali. Soon the need arose for more space and the school acquired three additional buildings in the neighborhood, one dedicated to the Preschool program.
In our fifth year,  2014, ISKR moved to a new campus in Nyarutarama, conveniently located near the MTN Center. The new campus boasted larger, light-filled classrooms and a self-contained Preschool section, as well as a new science lab and special use facilities for art and drama. An expanded library and media lab overlooking the beautiful hills and lake of Kigali filled the upper storey.  We were also thrilled about our play spaces, which will included a new elementary playground and a full-sized basketball court.

Due to growing enrollment we moved the Preschool or EC (Early Childhood) section to a self contained campus on the same road as the main campus. This has provided an excellent amount of both indoor and outdoor space to the students in this section. As a result we were able to open a large, well-equipped Media/Library center in the main campus. In line with this the school has taken a great step forward in IT provision.

ISKR offers a full curriculum for children ages 2 ½ to 18, which includes Advanced Placement classes in High School and the AP Capstone Diploma and an expanding number of sports and after-school activities. Electives include art, music, drama and Rwandan studies. ISKR also adopted the IPC in 2015 and IMYC in 2017.

ISKR  continues as a parent-owned school with priority given to fully engaging parents and students and to creating a warm sense of community.
