Welcome to Secondary School

Thank you for your interest in our Secondary School, a vibrant section of the International School of Kigali-Rwanda that delivers a rigorous academic program to students in grades 6 – 12.

Our Middle and High School teachers promote student centered learning, critical thinking, and creativity while guiding our students toward global citizenship. Through varied teaching methods, students gain the skills needed to solve problems through inquiry and leave our school ready to take on their next academic challenge – be it in a secondary school in another corner of the globe or in higher education.

Because of the diversity of our student body, we believe that preparing students to excel beyond the walls of ISKR is one of our most important duties. It is for this reason that our curriculum is rooted in AERO standards with an emphasis on inquiry and critical thinking. At the High School level, students are offered a wide variety of Advanced Placement courses to prepare them for higher education, including AP World History, Physics, Calculus, French, Literature, Language Composition, and more.

Students experience a core curriculum centered on Mathematics, Sciences, Social Sciences, and the English Language Arts. Because we believe in developing well-rounded individuals, every student takes at least one world language and a variety of co-curricular subjects, including the fine arts, physical education, health, and information technology. Academic electives vary and may include such subjects as Economics, Accounting, and Creative Writing.

With our incredible location in Rwanda, students routinely take educational excursions around the country and to other parts of Africa and the world. Middle School students take an annual trip within East Africa, which has included Kenya and Tanzania in recent years. Our Model UN delegates have dazzled at conferences in South Africa, Nairobi, and Dubai.

The ISKR Secondary School is a place where no idea is out of reach, where teachers develop close connections with students, and where rich cultural experiences in and outside the classroom help students become agents for change in our global community.

Come spend a day with us to experience ISKR for yourself!

Warmest regards,

Mary M. Powell

Secondary School Coordinator & Social Studies Teacher
BA in History and Linguist, Grinnell College
TEFL Certificate
M.Ed. in Global Studies in Education, University of Illinois

I joined ISKR in early 2012 after having lived in Rwanda for 4 years, first as a teacher at the Maranyundo School for Girls, then as the Lead Instructor at the Akilah Institute for Women. Before coming to Rwanda in 2008, I taught at the Paraclete Academy in South Boston and was a Program Coordinator for a Hurricane Katrina rebuilding project in New Orleans. I hold a BA in History from Grinnell College, which is located in my home state of Iowa. In my spare time I volunteer for Every Child is My Child, a small non-profit which partners with local primary schools in Rwanda and Burundi to provide free secondary education for every one of their graduates.
